Children's Eye Tests

Children rarely complain about their sight, but can show signs of problems with their vision. For example by:

  • Sitting close to the TV
  • Holding objects very close to their face
  • Blinking a lot
  • Rubbing their eyes
  • One eye turning in or out (squint or lazy eye)

At Jean Rigby Opticians we believe that young eyes need special care and that regular eye examinations are important to ensure that your child can see properly.

It is widely recognised that without good vision children can experience development set-backs that can be easily avoided with regular eye examinations.

Free Eye Tests for Children

Children’s eye examniations are free on the NHS up to the age of 16 years, or 19 years if they are in full time education. Should your child require prescription lenses, you will be entitled to an NHS voucher towards the costs of your child’s glasses.
Children do not have to be able to read to have their eyes examined. It is possible to see whether the child has a squint, or needs glasses, without asking them any questions, using age appropriate tests and equipment. Eye examinations do not hurt. It might be necessary to put drops into your child’s eyes so that they can be tested to see if they need glasses and the backs of the eyes are healthy. If this is the case for your child, it will be discussed with you in advance.
